Originally sanded smooth it still looks perfect. Embed HardieBacker cement board firmly and evenly in the wet mortar. It’ll keep the cement board from moving up and down.Īpply a supporting bed of mortar or modified thinset to subfloor using a 1/4 in square-notched trowel. The reason for the layer of thinset between the cement board and the subfloor is to fill the voids/gaps between the two. What kind of thinset do you use for Hardibacker?Īn unmodified thinset (Masterblend) is fine between the Hardi and the subfloor. Thus I would suggest removing the current wood planks flooring, install a 3/4″ outdoor grade plywood, thinset and then your HardieBacker (screwed down). The installation manual for HardieBacker suggests to embed it in thin-set and it should be installed over plywood. Do you have to put thinset under Hardibacker? Which side goes up, smooth or rough? Either is acceptable, but we recommend that the smooth side with the nailing pattern of every 8″ on center go up. Which side of Hardibacker board faces out?
